Ok so I am looking at picking a couple of sheets of baltic birch or similar (non chinese please) and it has been a while since I have dealt in the stuff. I am a bit shocked how high the price is I have seen 50-100 per 4×8 sheet with no real difference buying the 5×5 product.

Now reading online it seems like they may have had an off winter and this might be artificially high. Is this the case? If so can we expect a price drop within the next year and approximately when?

In my case I am just making some apple boxes for my Video business and can wait a while if need be. And if they are going to stay at this price I might just use maple instead.

That’s normal where I am at. b2 birch 1/2”x4×8 runs around $45 if I travel 2 hours to a big box store. Otherwise I am looking at $60+. Maple is about the same, if not a little higher.

I would expect everything to start costing even more in the coming near future.

I buy my ply at my local lumberyard…They carry Birch, Maple, and Oak…..I pay about $40 a sheet for a 4×8 Birch, and around $50 for Maple and Oak…..Stay out of the Chinese crap as it’s junk…plys suck, and tearout is terrible…...That’s prolly about the best you’re gonna do as far as price….....

It is about $45 to $60 for the made in USA at my suppliers. Oak about the same, maple a little higher.

Real BB in 3/4” (18 mm) runs about $55 up here per 5×5 sheet.

Hmm so Back to the initial question is this a temporary price bump like what I was reading about or is it a pretty consistent long term price.

I am not completely sold on it having to be BB and am open to other wood options. My only requirements are that it be a light colored, hardish and without a lot of grain showing for a smoother look. These will probably be 1/2 inch tops and 3/4 sides.

Have your say...
