I read somewhere that the latest discovery in micro-fine abrasives is….Mushrooms! Yes a certain type of mushroom has a silica type that is so fine that it is perfect for fine honing of plane cutters and chisels.

However, since I read everything I can get my hands on, it could be a circa 1935 Popular Mechanics, or The New York Times for all I know… Has anyone seen the article? I’m anxious to try this method. Oh, this fungus grows on a tree if I recall, not out of the ground. That’s all I remember. Who knows the answer?

Whoa, Edit! That’s it, Don!! Right here in Lumberjocks!! The search feature within Lumberjocks let me down.
Thanks, Don! The links come close, but as I recall the article I read went into a bit more detail as to the procedure, like whether the rough or finished side of a leather strop produced a better mirror polish on the cutter. At least now I know I didn’t just dream this…. or that it came to me in a mushroom-induced haze….
Anyway… I’d sure like to try this method!
I favorited it too! Thanks again, sir!
