I installed a new bench vise tonight and I am drilling for some DIY dogs. What are the standard spacings from dog hole to dog hole as you travel away from the vise on the bench?

Thanks.

Depends on the throat capacity of your vise, but generally 6” or so.

I’d still go with 6” so you don’t spend all day opening and closing your vice. Otherwise, you just want to make sure you space them so you can clamp an object of any length between your vise and one of the dogs.

I’ve seen them even be as close as 3” I think thats what Mr Schwartz did on one of the benches made in Woodworking Magazine.

It is a balancing act. The closer they are the more holes there are in your bench. The further apart they are the more you have move your vise in and out. I like them 3” to 4” apart, but 6” works too but I wouldn’t go over 6”.
