I am making trivets for Christmas gifts. Does anyone have experience—good and bad—with staining, applying finish to a trivet? I would like to make the trivets attractive, but I don’t want to have any finish melt onto the bottom of a hot pan.

Also, I plan to make end-grain pattern of trivet. Any suggestions on types of glue? I don’t want to have the glue melt on the bottom of a hot pan.

Thanks.
