Sounds like a list of woodworking clubs our members belong to will be a new feature coming soon to Lumberjocks… A members list of sawmill and lumber yards that sell to individuals would be nice to have as well.

I am not aware of any immediate plans but I will discuss this and see if/how it fits with other ideas for the future.

Thanks for the feedback.

In the meantime, what’s to stop us from creating a forum topic to build a list?

I’d put one in the list now but we don’t have a local club that I am aware of down here in Panama City, Florida.

Debbie,

I have some suggestions to improve the site’s functionality (related to finding local groups, should LJ’s ever want to organize some), but I imagine that it would take a lot of work to implement. I think that being able to network as woodworkers is extremely important. If people want to buy or sell tools, wood, shop space, etc., wouldn’t it be great to have one area on the site where people can go to to find what they need in their neck of the woods? The Trade & Swap Forum is useful to a point, but being able to filter things locally would be awesome.

On the Workshops tab, the List feature is extremely limiting. If someone is trying to find other members in their area, there’s no way to filter the list by city, state, region, or country for that matter. So that leaves a few options:

1 - Tab through all 173 pages of listings, hoping to spot nearby members.

2 - Do a general site search and hope for the best. If I were to search for my home town, most matches are my forum signature, repeated over and over. The signal to noise ratio is very low.

3 - Try to use the map feature, which only displays a handful of shops at any given time.

So yeah, programming the list and map to be more useful would be pretty intensive. But it would be very easy to make a new Forum, call it Local Shops and Services, where I could click on USA—-> Texas and post a new topic asking if anyone in the Dallas – Fort Worth area has a wide drum sander (or whatever) that I could use. Or someone else might say, I’m in Chicago and I want to learn woodturning, is there anyone nearby that can give me some pointers? Another member could say, who wants to start a woodworking club in LA?

I could see how this type of localized forum would really engage our members and make this great communal online experience into an even better real-life communal experience.

Thoughts?
