Topic tags/keywords: plane pricing old tools collecting selling

You know, it’s helpful to have some knowledge about the value of an old plane, but as I look around in my shop at the dozens upon dozens of planes I have, for the most part I have no recollection of what I paid for each one. Yeah, a few still have the tags or stickers on them from antique shops and yard sales, but mostly I have no clue what I paid for the planes I own. Same with my other hand tools, table saws and other shop equipment! The price paid is quickly forgotten. Perhaps my compulsion to buy more old iron is to amortize those few bad purchases, to improve the cost-per-plane statistic for my herd. Nahhh. The point I wish to make is that if I was totally hesitant to buy anything, I’d have far less of a collection! Go yard saling on a Saturday with $30 or $50 dollars in your pocket, and see if you can’t snag the best deals you can find. As you develop a feel for the market, your hesitation to buy will fade away. When and if you sell, you’ll be able to price your items well for the collector, not for the speculator. This is the real joy of collecting!

Im with ya PK … i wont go over $25 for a plane. The hunt is a lot more fun for me than anything else. Tracking them down makes me feel soo badass especially when i can spot a plane or 2 from the road.

I started really looking for hand plane a couple of years ago. Since then, I can tell you what I paid for almost every one I’ve bought. I still don’t hesitate if I’m not sure. I’m not trying to make money at this game, just have some fun.

Thanks, guys!
yes, chrisstef, we do tend to develop the senses of a real bird-dog when we’re out on the prowl! Sometimes I say to the wife when we’re out driving, “I think I smell a handplane” when we stop at a sale. Don: I suppose, for lack of good memory, I should have been keeping a journal of what I spend on planes as I buy them. The numbers might scare me! I keep saying to myself that I’ll start selling someday, from the bottom up, to cull the herd and recoup some dollars… ahem, to buy more!!

I love the prowl … in the summer i like to take the jeep out and scour the more rural areas around town with a nice big cup of coffee and the dog in the back, jammin to some tunes. I tell ya for a lab her bird doggin skills suck.

Awesome dog, chrisstef! DonW: That looks like a great show!!
I was wondering…I’ve heard of this week-long yard sale that goes across four states, like Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio, ( I probably got that wrong…) but I was wondering if a compulsive plane buyer ever made that trip, and got through it without breaking the springs on their truck? I wanna do that trip someday. Does anyone here know what that show is called?

I have a couple of collections that I enjoy greatly. But I do wonder what the rest of the family will be saying about them and me when I’m dead. Will they be saying: “wasn’t dad precious saving all those?” or will they say: “was dad nuts??”...........................

Hey, redryder!
Yeah, I have nightmares about my collection getting sold at a yard sale after I die, for $1 each, or worse, some charity comes by and scoops all my worldly goods and the choice stuff all ends up in the truck driver’s workshop. Should it matter? Heh, not sure.

Like Don I have a pretty good memory of what I paid for each of my planes. I don’t have it written down anywhere, I just remember.

Thanks, Dan! I’m beginning to think I am just plain indiscriminate when I am out buying… or do I just not WANT to know how much money is getting sunk into my collection?

oh no, I can’t remember unless it was really special. If its not written down I’ll forget. I typically take a picture and add it to a folder for the trip, day or just the purchase, the a note with the information.
