That form you get from the federal government—for a license or permit, to pay your taxes or qualify for benefits or grants—soon may be simpler to fill out.

Is it OK to say ‘queer’ in debate? Yes, says California lawmakerOdd it was, but queer? Well, no.A California lawmaker became confused when a word used historically to mean strange, or as an insult to homosexuals, was spoken on the Assembly floor today by another lawmaker referring favorably to gays and lesbians.

Assemblywoman Linda Halderman, R-Fresno, said she had always thought that the word “queer” was a “degrading epithet.” She expressed surprise after Assemblyman Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, said the word during a floor debate.”Define what you mean when you say ‘queer’?” she asked, prompting the chamber to grow silent.

Halderman’s query occurred during discussion of Assembly Joint Resolution 43, which seeks federal protection against harassment, discrimination or disparate treatment based on sexual orientation.Lara had said the measure would benefit “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ‘queer’ Americans.”Bad is now good, and “queer” is now a compliment.

A draft of the Democratic Party’s official party platform includes support for gay marriage for the first time.A person who has seen the platform draft says the party cites support for “marriage equality” and “the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples.” The person spoke on condition of anonymity and was not authorized to speak publicly ahead of a platform committee meeting in Detroit on Saturday. The language will be considered by the platform committee but could be amended before the party’s convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September. President Barack Obama will be formally nominated at the convention.

SACRAMENTO — Not every proposed law is historic or sweeping. Some merely are pretty good ideas — perhaps even important for a low-income kid.One such bill is among the hundreds awaiting action as the Legislature heads into its final month. The measure’s goal is to stop schools from socking students with illegal fees.Fees for sports and field trips and textbooks and art, for example.Bio | E-mail | Recent columnsAds by GoogleAppliance ReviewsFind out which Appliances are Best With our Unbiased ReviewsConsumerReports.orgLVN Training SacramentoLearn From Expert Instructors & Get Hands-On Experience.
