black and decker HD 1250 or something

this was advertised as black and decker HD 1250. google search for this model shows that few people really have fond memories of this router, but no specification. it looks VERY solid.

I won this on an auction and going to pick it up in the next few days. if anybody knows what I should look for or even (as someone told me a few minutes ago) if this might be a 3/8” router.

first one I’ve ever seen : ) Hopefully you won’t be limited to 3/8” bits….I have an old Craftsman that looks about this size but takes 1/4” bits only…Best wishes

You would be much better off buying a more popular well built router. Off brand or rare electric tools will only cause frustration for the user. You will definitely not want this router if it is 3/8”. Bits normally come in 1/4” and 1/2”. There are also some 8mmm bits. I use all three. I have never seen or used a 3/8” bit.

I haven’t seen this model before, but the base is very similar to a Dewalt DW610. Dewalt and Bosch use the same treads on their collets. Hopefully, this router will be the same. I would take it to a local woodstore and see if you can come up with a replacement collet.

Moshel, please don’t spend your time building this old fella into a table.
It looks like the old 1/4’ shaft style collet and you will accumulate a bunch of 1/4” shaft carbides that you will probalby never use once you find out about 1/2” shanks.
Why? Cause they slip and grind up your collets if you’re not extremely careful and #2. you can’t find all the bits you will want to use with 1/4” collets.
It will probalby be usefill around you shop as a hand ehld machine for laminate trimming or round overs etc.

Cheers
Bob

It’s very similar to a DW610 – a router that has sort of
gone out of style but is still a very solid tool.

I have a 610 and about 5 bases for it… but depth adjustment
is NOT refined compared to the routers we have these days,
though it doesn’t suffer from concenticity errors you may find
in the PC other routers that twist in the base.

What is peculiar here is the large “growths” on either side of the
top of the tool. The 610 is a beefy router but does not have
these things sticking out. My guess is it’s either quite old or
intended for some special use.

Black and Decker made an industrial line of routers for awhile -
and they were good quality.

Unless it’s a 1/2” shank router or it’s under $20 I would probably
pass on it… but I already have several routers and don’t need
another.

I used my DW610 in a table for a long time and it was an excellent
performer with 1/2” shanks. The collet always seizes the bit so
if I want to change the cutter I have bang on the collet nut with
a hammer until it releases. I’m used to doing this so it no longer
annoys me – but be prepared for this.

First, i love old solid machines. second, this was sold for ~40$. Oh, well – i’ll wait and see if its 1/4” or 1/2”. I have two other makitas (one of them old, one new), so this is not my only router. however, both my makitas are plunge and they are not really good under the table.

Thank you all for trying to identify the beast. strange thing on the top of the router are very strange – couldn’t think of anything that might be hiding there. Oh, well – i’ll see.
