Two woods I haven’t really used much for projects. But I have a lot of both of them – either that I resawed into boards on my bandsaw (cedar) or taken to the sawmill (butternut). I think the cedar is just ‘too much’ to be used on it’s own. Nothing in our house has that much wood grain and it pops out too much. to just use it to line drawers and chests would be a waste though.

i was thinking about as bookmatched panels where the frame etc would be made from butternut. what do you all think of this? from a design or just practical standpoint.. i haven’t found ANY examples of furniture construction with these two woods used together, yet alone, just cedar as the panels. would the red cedar pop out too much and look out of place? just looking for some opinions here. or – better yet – if you find any similar picture examples ..

or would a better complimentary color be walnut and cedar?

my last project was that.. http://jubinsky.wordpress.com/2012/06/19/birthday-box/
and i thought it was neat.. hard to get an idea what a chest of it would be like though..

..of course, i have less walnut. and it’s expensive.. but we’re talking too color combinations here..

I think butternut and cedar would look LOVELY together.. I really do. It’s an unusual pairing. I bet the butternut would offset the lighter flames in the cedar, if it has it.

oh that’s a neat chest.

thanks liss. yeah i think it’d be neat. i guess making something is the best way to find out. mineral spirits kind of fake shows how it may look finished ya? maybe even just putting that on a handful of the boards and putting them next to each other.
