Is the proper way to get lumber flat by using a jointer to flatten one side and then using a thickeness planer to match the joint on the other side?

To get a piece of stick to have two flat, paralell sides, are a thickness planer and jointer the tools for the job? i have nobody else to ask, so thanks for your help.

A thickness planer will keep two sides parallel. If the reference side is not flat the planer will simply follow the curve of the reference side so if you want lumber that is both flat and parallel then you need to create a flat reference side by taking it through a jointer before planing the lumber.
