So here I am trying to learn Sketchup. Got a couple of questions for those who use it.

I just opened Sketchup to fiddle around and I get an all white screen – no axis lines, no little man. Nothing.

So I shut down thinking there’s a glitch—- reopen and same thing.

Went to help menu and I could not find how to reset the axis.

Can anyone shed light on this? Surely I can’t be the only one that has had this happen.

Thanks in advance.

Well – have spent the last two hours trying to figure out this little issue. All white screen – no nothing showing.

But being stubborn has paid off and it’s almost embarrassing to admit what the problem was. But here it is just in case someone else has the problem. The issue was this——- it was the maximizing tool. You know that little square in the right upper corner. My screen was not maximized. When I clicked that square – everything magically appeared. Something probably someone more technically savvy would have figured out right away, but now I know.

Personally, I gave up on sketchup pretty quickly. My projects aren’t that complicated and I tend to make lots of modification on the fly (aka try to cope with problems caused from my inexperience) so it didn’t seem worth the effort. The program seems to be pretty powerful if you are willing to learn it. I guess what I’m saying is, if you really want to figure this thing out, don’t sell yourself short. So many people recommended the program as a thing to blog about because so many people can’t get a grasp on it on their own. Just my words of encouragement to someone trying to give a lot back to this online community!

Theres a 5 part tutorial done by a gentleman that answered almost all my questions in the first 2 parts about Sketchup, after that it was easy.

Just because you can’t figure it out on your own in an afternoon doesn’t mean its a bad tool.

Have you tried “File->New”

Maybe try opening an existing file?

I hope my post didn’t sound like I was saying this is a bad tool. Quite the contrary actually (based on results I’ve seen). I was just saying that when I tried this a long while ago, I didn’t easily find much in the way of tutorials. Although it seems like lots of people are posting some good links now, I’m still hoping to follow along with Betsy’s blog here and have these links in my back pocket in case I come back to it.

Thanks guys.

Gary – yep, tried new screen several times. However, my computer did not maximize the screen—so always white screen.

Marc – I’m going to try that site – thanks for the information.

Hokie—- the computer is not for everyone for sure. SU is a proven program but not everyone will enjoy using it. I’ve taken it on as a challenge. And once challenged—I will not be denied!!!
