Can anyone tell me if this is salted sassafras?

Nice knot!!

Hard to tell from the picture but Sassafras has a distinct order/taste.

Well see…that’s what I get for letting the spell check make suggestions and then not pay attention.

That on the left is my early attempts at the Celtic knot. It came apart twice in the process but turned out OK.
I just need to experiment more with gluing acrylic to wood. It’s apparently very important to rough up the surface of the plastic so the glue sticks better. That is a slice of black with yellow streaks that is glued into the wood at 45 degree cuts on all 4 sides.

If it is sassafras, it will have a cinnamon brown heartwood and the pore structure is ring porous.

It looks like a piece of Spalted Tamarind I picked up a couple of months ago. Very similar.

Well, whatever it is, all of the features were on the outside.
It has very few spalted marks on the lower blank after turning.
I’m going to say that Charles is probably correct in that it is a piece of tamarind, but not the best of the lot!
Maybe the gun metal hardware will make it look better.
