Before I got married, and long before woodworking caught my interest, I used to go through cars like TP. New and old – cars were my passion. I’ve loved them all from my 48 Master Deluxe to my 53 Buick Special, and from my 63 Caddy DeVille to my 67 Camaro to my 96 Impalla SS. I would buy them, play with them for a few months or a year, and then sell them for the next love interest. That’s pretty much where all my money went. My last two before getting married were a 2004 Cadillac STS that I bought new and a 1966 Olds Cutlass 442 I got off eBay.
So I get married and all that comes to an end (I’m happy with the trade up). Along comes wife, and marriage, and several baby carriages later and I’ve found it’s cheaper to rent with my commute (60 mi each way) than it is to own. The last car we owned was a suburban, and it cost about 12k a year in gas ALONE! So we’ve gone though a procession of renting economy cars through the last few years (and 5 kids). At about $400 a mo for the rental including insurance with unlimited mileage, it’s not bad. But my father-in-law ALWAYS has his eye out for a deal. He’s a car guy and has picked up a few cars for us over the last few years, but this past week, he SCORED one for me. He grabbed up a 1997 Cadillac Eldo ETC with only 3000 miles on it. If it were older, I would have called it a “barn find” at only $1800.
I’ve bought 2 new Caddys off the lot and this thing BOOGIES just like they did brand new. Judging by the interior and exterior, it was an old lady car for sure. Anyhow, I’m pretty psyched about getting into a 2 door again (I’m 34) and wanted to share how happy I was with this deal and how thankful I was to have in-laws as cool as I do. I heard the stories before I got married – I never knew it was possible. lol
