Topic tags/keywords: cedar chest mothball smell removal tips

A friend asked me how to get rid of the mothball smell in an old cedar chest? They tried sanding the surfaces but everything now put in the chest still smells like mothballs. A little help please.

I’m guessing but:
Open it up in a sunny location to llet the sun help break down the camphor.
Get some activated charcoal and lock it up inside at night.
You will have to rejuvenate the charcoal in your oven daily.
If that wont reduce it you may have to seal off the old wood and re apply a cedar veneer.

Good luck

That’s a new one, Bob. I’ve seen cedar oil on the internet somewhere, for restoring the cedar smell. You might try finding some of that. If that doesn’t work, lock a skunk in chest overnight. They won’t even notice the moth ball smell the next day.

Tim, that wont work —they wont spray in a small space. I have a coworker that has handled them in a havaheart trap and they don’t spray. I guess they don’t like the smell either. Note: I have never tested this, and maybe YOUR skunks differ from the norm :-)

If you want this, I suggest you find a skunk to upset then lock your clothes in the chest . . . .

Here’s a site that sells cedar oil, if you haven’t found one by now.

Good luck.
