Topic tags/keywords: question dust collection

i’m new to woodworking and have finally decided to invest in dust control.I’m thinking about delta 50-760 collector and a jet afs1000b air filtration system. My question would I be able to set it up as a central system or will i have to move it around to each machine?I have a tablesaw, planer, router and miter saw I would like to hook it up to now.I would like to add a jointer, bandsaw and a benchtop sander in the future.I’ve read I could use pvc to plumb it with.I was wondering if I used blast gates to shut off machines thats not in use if that would work?Any help on the subject would be appreciated, thanks.

The air flow on that Delta is WAY better than my HF DC, and to be honest, I have no problems running my table saw, jointer, router table etc… ducted with blast gates. I run a 5” run split to 2 4” runs, so I pull both upper and lower… Works great, that Delta should work better…

I “think” that is the same DC I have. 1.5hp model? If so, you will be pushing the limits if you want to use as a central DC system. I also use blast gates and 4” hose but need to change to 6” to gain some air movement for the longer run. You might look into getting the book “Woodshop Dust Control” by Sandor Nagyzlanzsky(SP). He does a real nice job of explaining dust collection in an easy to read and understandable way.

I have a new Delta 50-760 dust collector which I will be installing in one corner of my garage. Many woodworkers have this dust collector and there is a wealth of on-line information. Try Googling Delta 50-760 Duct Layout.

Here is an example of a post from another forum which has a lot of useful information.

I use a 50-760 in my shop and have it piped with 4” S&D PVC.

I would reccomend good aluminum self cleaning blast gates and short runs of flex hose to your tools. You will need a pre separator of some sort unless you like cleaning the filter and changing the bags.

Look into a Wynn filter, the dust bags that come with them don’ t really work that well in the long run but are better than nothing. Your lungs are worth more than the cost of the upgrades.

Here is what I did to my Delta, it never looses suction, runs with my drum sander, table saw, two planers, miter saw, jointer and a floor sweep.

I have a Jet 1100 cfm with a Dust Dog pleated filter. I’m running ~10’ of 6” with branches of 4” to some of the tools. My TS and SCMS have 6” gates. All of the seams are taped with aluminum duct tape.

With an empty bag and clean filter, my setup will suck up small animals. – lol

As Medicken suggests, read Sandor’s book. Keep your runs short which likely means making the DC portable unless things are close together. I have four 1.5 HP DCs spread around to avoid having to move one around all the time. This has the advantage over a big DC in that I am only running 1.5 HP at a time instead of 3HP or more.
