Guys—- and Gals—need your input. As most of you know I’m out of the shop until at least Fall due to medical issues resulting from a car accident. I’m trying hard to keep my head in woodworking by blogging on tips, etc. I’d really appreciate some ideas of what you would like to read about so that I can take the time to blog about it and keep myself fresh and at the same time being relevant to what others what to see.

I’ve taught beginning woodworking and have been an avid woodworker since about 1989. I don’t know it all, by any measure of the imagination, and I’m not the very best woodworker out there. That said, I would like to help others by blogging about different topics.

So please give me your ideas and I’ll try to blog about them. I just really want to keep my head busy during this shelf time that I have right now.

Any ideas are appreciated. I’ll do the best I can to do a good job.

thanks in advance.

Ditto to both of the above rmks. Also how about different glues. When should it be glued, screwed or nailed. When to dowel, mortise or ???

Having attempted Sketchup a couple times and walked away in utter frustration, I would be most interested in your take on this piece of software. Your style of writing makes for easy reading so I’m pretty confident your instructions will be better than the help that comes with it.

gluing… how to achieve clean glue lines, how to get rid of glue marks and how to avoid them. i could never figure out how people make these perfect furniture that have no marks from cleaning the glue from the corners. also finishing – how to get different looks, what finish to use in what situation.

well, that’s enough for a lifetime, i think. will keep you busy.

Jigs. Your favorties, which are most effective, how to build simple ones, which ones are more trouble than they are worth, when are commercial ones better than shop built?

How about starting with the basics, like accurate measuring / layout, how close is close enough, when to use a tape measure verses a steel rule, when should you use a marking knife, or a pencil. What are the different tools for measuring / layout and how do you use them correctly. Basic math and geometry tips and tricks for proper measuring / layout. It may seem very basic, but I had been woodworking for years before I figured out I needed to use the same tape measure through out the project.

I was wondering what was taking you to get started. ;-) With all these suggestions your little fingers should be flying across the keyboard. What’re you waiting for?

I vote for learning more about handtools, especially planes. You could spend days just reading: “Patrick’s Blood and Gore” http://www.supertool.com/stanleybg/stan0a.html Believe it or not, it is just about hand planes. I don’t always agree with him, but there is a lot of good information there.

Betsy, what me and my fellow ”Y” chromosome carrying LJ’s probably need is more insight into the minds and hearts of our ”XX” chromome partners in life. Good Grief, after 32 years of togetherness, I am still trying to figure things out.

Keep posting Betsy, I relish your input.

Thanks one and all the ideas. I think I’m going to several. One blog will be under my ideas and tips blog and then I’m going to create a seperate blog about Sketchup.

Right now my internet connection at home is down until at least Saturday. So I’m doing what I can from work before the day starts.

Keep the ideas coming and I’ll do the best I can to blog about them. This should keep me busy until I’m back in the Shop!

There obviously a big call for Sketchup so I’ve started a blog on that. But I am also going to work on the other suggestions as well. Since I have until late August or early September before I’m back in the shop I should be able to hit most of them.

I want to thank you all for your suggestions.
