Wipe-on satin poly is my favorite. I typically seal with a coat of shellac first. Then 3-4 coats of wipe-on poly and I like the way it looks.

That should work really well. That and it’s super easy to use.

Just remember to take your rags and lay them out to dry outside, so you don’t have a unwanted shop fire.

This finish will look just fine for mahogany. I agree with Russel that this is my favorite finish as well although I tend to go with the gloss.

But as far as the wipe-on product goes buying it is fairly expensive. Wipe-on poly is simply poly that has been cut with mineral spirits. You can easily make your own. I generally make mine up between 50 and 75 percent poly. Then simply apply as many coats as you want. If you want an even faster drying finish then you can dilute straight poly with lacquer thinner.

-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.
