Guys I am looking for any help, plans, pics, whatever you have for a surround style fireplace mantel. Obviously I can adjust to the size I need, just looking for anything to help get started. Keep in my mind I am for sure a newbie at this stuff with fairly limited tools, so the simpler the better. Gotta look good to keep the wife happy, but gotta be basic enough to actually get it done! Thanks guys!

Hmm, I don’t have any photos of the one I made. My advice would be if you are going to paint it let the paint dry for a good long time before you use the fireplace or the paint will bubble. In fact I think an oil based paint would be better than Laytex.

Here are a couple I’ve made for customers:

Take out the carving, downsize the mantel a bit and this is a pretty simple fireplace surround.

I haven’t made one yet though I recently did get a book on the subject called Making Mantels by Getts. Seems pretty good. Also, if you are a FWW or FHB member, you can access an older article (I can look up the date if you’d like) that shows basic plans for four styles of mantels. Shoot me a PM.
