Topic tags/keywords: plane refurbishing

Ok. I do have some parts salvaged from that wreck of the DE6. A frog that is now all nice and shiny, the iron and chip breaker ( Stanley) from the KK7. I also have a few other parts just laying around on the bench..

A couple totes I have made from Walnut. These are spoken for. I will make a new #5 tote for this project.

A pattern from a Union 5A might be the thing. As for knobs…

I might have a couple sitting around. So, I have most of the spares needed for this project

So, now is the time to send Igor out of the Lab, and on a quest for “parts”. Igor came back from cruising the Bay of E. Seems igor had picked up a Union/Stanley style base for a #6c. IF it arrives at the Lab intact, should be a start. Igor also picked up a “Parts Plane’. The handle bolts will help this project out. The rest of the parts plane? We’ll see. These two items will get here at the “Lab” next week. About next weekend, you might just hear shouts of “Its ALIVE! IT IS ALIVE!” From the “ashes of this:

To maybe a groovy version of this?

This is a Stanley/Bailey #6 smooth bottom from just after WWII.

There may be more to this story. I might, just might have a Bailey #5 base coming into the shop. About the time that this #6c is getting a test drive down Pine Avenue. Selling a couple of my “off-brand #5s” to pay for some items. This might turnout to be fun, after all…..

Ok, A rusty ( not too much, just along the sides) 18” long base showed up today, in one piece, no less. Spent some time this morning cleaning off the rust. Bolt holes for the Union frog didn’t quite line up, base’s was a little closer set together. Got out some files, and worked on the frog until the bolts would line up. Frog is now on the new base. Only “names” on this new base is a “Made in USA” behind the front knob’s boss. Threads in that boss were stripped out, so. a 1/4”x 20, or a 1/4”x 28 bottoming tap will get some use. I ‘ll get a new bolt later for that. Frog base looks like the second “H” pattern Stanley came out with.

Still waiting on the second “Parts plane to show up, maybe tomorrow. Then I can check out the tote bolt. I’ll need the angle for drilling a new #5 tote. Looks like quite a bit of fun coming up. Base will need a re-painting, japanning is kind of in sad shape. The corrugated bottom, though, looks GREAT. Step one to get a #6c is under way.

Pictures later…..

Ok, here are some pictures…

That groovy bottom. 18” long, AND in one piece, thank you very much..

Those sides, after a thorough cleaning of the rust

The “Front Porch” of this “No-Name plane’

and, the rear deck. Note the base for the tote to sit on..

and the frog area. This is where I had to file the Union frog to match the base’s mounting holes.

As you can see, the Japanning is a very dull, and rough gray. Time for a re-painting? Well, Franckein Plane is on the runway, getting warmed up. Stay tuned to this Bat Channel for more updates…

LOL! I’‘m working on one of those myself right now. (Although I’m trying to stick with the correct parts, they will have come from several different sources.)

While out test driving the KK7, noticed the tote wasn’t quite right, seemed to move around. Took the tote off and tried it out on the Franckein Plane. Ah perfect fit! Grabbed a knob from the parts box, and a bolt. Hey, this might just work, after all…. A look at a Franckein plane in flight…

That IS a nice tote, Don W, but it just didn’t fit a Union style base. Looks better here, right? Still needs a paint job on the base, but we are getting closer to the finish line now..

Lets see. A Stanley?base, a Union frog, a custom tote, and a sweetheart iron. Franckein Plane? one more look, before the black paint?

Ja, Ja, Knob needs a little work. I’ll do that while the paint dries… Next plane!

Mailman brought a few items today. A “Parts Plane” for a #5 project was in one box..

A sargent lateral?? Red Frogs? Hmmm. Well, Mailman also had a second box, as well. A well-used levr cap, a 2-3/8” wide iron/wide chip breaker, and a 2” wide chip breaker. Just for fun, i slipped that new iron into the “new” #6c i just finished up.

Then i tried out the Buck Brothers 2” iron, the “new” 2” wide chip breaker, and that new lever cap on that Parts Plane

Edge grain, had the iron set a little deep. Re-adjusted, and flipped that Poplar board down flat. Time for some face time…

another look??

The area around that frog is scheduled to “hop” onto a Bailey #5 base that is on it’s way here. The high knob as well. Will need to made another #5 tote. One to match the KK7’s base, and one that will match the bailey’s base. The rest of the parts? Base will be a spare, the tote as well. I MIGHt have a plastic one to get rid of, so here is a wooden one. Nothing gets wasted around here, except maybe me…

Hmmm, thinking of restoring that parts plane. It has some good “bones”. I’ll need to clean back to bare metal on the base, anyway. Not sure about that gray paint job, though. Handles WILL get worked over. Might have an old #5 on the way, might use that for parts on the “new” #5 base that is on the way. It is getting complicated around here…
