When using MDF as a substrate do you still have to veneer both sides to aviod warping. I know if i am using plywood i need to veneer both sides but i thought i might have heard somewhere when using MDF you only need to veneer 1 side.

Nope – veneer both sides. I am tossing a quilted maple veneer over mdf because the front and back veneers were laid on in the same direction. These were 18×18 panels and cupped a full 1/4 inch.

MDF is stable, and i use it all the time as a substrate, but the way i look at it glue the veneer on still puts some pressure onto the material. when you put veneer on both sides it will counter the pressure, basically cancelling each side out.
