Topic tags/keywords: question

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this, so if it’s not correct please move it.

I need some help from you all. My husband is a fellow lumberjock on here, and is always making projects for other people, never himself. We just had our first child last summer, and his time in the shop has all but ceased because he’s been great about helping me with our son. He is out of the country for work for a couple weeks, and we will be celebrating “Father’s Day” when he gets back – giving me some extra time to figure out what to get him. I finally thought of something – I’d like to find him a nice keepsake box to put his watch, wallet etc. in at night. I know it’s something he could probably make himself, but I am hoping to give him something (i.e. not give him another project he doesn’t have time for) from a skilled craftwsman rather than mass-produced items you can get everywhere. His favorite woods are walnut, spalted maple (or spalted anything, he’s a little obsessed), and red woods (like paduk, and bloodwood – are those species? That’s what some of the wood in his shop says on it at least), and I know he’s said something about liking those big strap-like looking hinges on the outside of a box he saw once.

Does anyone on here make things I might be able to buy? I searched Etsy, but didn’t find anything that struck me. I was thinking maybe we could figure out a design together that will be special for him. Any other suggestions on where to search for something like this would be great. Thanks guys for helping me out!

If you look at the top of the page, you will see a tab labeled “Projects”. Click on that and search for “box”. That will show you people that have listed a box(es) on their projects page. If you see any that you like, you can PM that person directly. This is quite a round about process, but might move the process along a little faster since not all members check in every day. Maybe next year I may go the tool route, a “standard” father’s day gift. But, I wanted something a little more sentimental for his first. I’ll paruse the projects and see what I can find, but hopefully others see this too and can put in their thoughts too.

You might check his commenting history on LJ and see if he seemed to REALLY like a particular box or style. Then send the maker a PM.

It may be difficult to get anyone to make you a box in less than two weeks depending on the degree of difficulty the box you want is and the schedule of the box maker.

I understand it may take longer to make a box than him being gone, but he’ll still be excited to hear a project is being built for him, not by him.

gfadvm (above) is too modest. He is on a roll with boxes right now and I’m sure would be able to help you out. You can send folks a Private Message(PM) by clicking on their icon from one of their posts, and then clicking “Send Message” under their icon.

As mentioned, you could view his Favorites. However, if his name is Chris, then he likely only has one favorite so far.

What a neat, and thoughtful idea for him though.

No suggestion on the box but wanted to say this is very thoughtful and I’m sure he will be appreciative.

I also wanted to mention, since this will end up being something he’ll cherish for a very long time, I’m not too concerned if he has to wait even after he gets home – if a box has to be made. He understands projects can take time, and I know he’d appreciate knowing something is being made for him and that’s the reason for delay. I probably should have come to this idea a few months ago, but it just finally hit me.

Thanks for everyone’s support.

Read your title…... thought he had passed away !
Custom made boxes can get very pricey.
