I’m using an oil stain on a project I’m finishing. I want to apply a glaze to get some added depth of color. Should I apply a sealer over the stain before applying the glaze? If so would shellac be a good choice? Finally can I use a water based glaze over the shellac { or whatever sealer recommended} ? I plan to use Arm R Seal for the top coat.
Thanks

you are on the perfect track….let the stain dry then use shellac about a 1lb cut…then glaze as you will…and water base will do fine over shellac….be sure to let it dry very well so as not to disturb it with the ARM R SEAL

best of luck

Hi DMR:

Cut to the chase.
Use a pigmented shellac.
I use Zinsser SealCoat as my sealing shellac.
To make a glaze, add an alcohol soluble tint to the shellac.
As always, experiment before you complete the final finish.

Thanks everyone. I plan to use Zinsser Seal Coat. I have some Mixol tints that I believe are soluble in alcohol. I’ve never tried tinting shellac before. If I’m using a burnt umber glaze what would you recommend for a tint?
As far as experimenting first goes, I would be embarrassed to tell you how many test piece I’ve gone through already.I’m ready for this project to be finished!

What can be added to make a toner? Could I use the Mixol tints or could something else be added instead? If you choose to tone, does that eliminate glazing? Sorry to sound so clueless, but this is new territory for me!

I recommend just a drop of color. A little goes a long way.

Thanks everyone for your help. After agonizing over color and making about 100 test pieces I finally came up with one that I thought would work.It consists of a yellow base over which I applied a medium reddish brown and the a light mission brown. After that I applied a seal coat of shellac then glazed with burnt umber. The final test piece {excluding the top coat} looked better than I would have thought possible.
So today I took the plunge and applied the combination of dyes that would be the base to the table itself. I kid you not, it turned out “purple”. I have no idea what went wrong! Of all the pieces I tested not one turned this color! I’ve only applied the dyes and haven’t put any shellac or stain. Help!!!!

Well I spent today dealing the with “The Color Purple”. Now I’m ready to move forward.
In my original post I asked about water based glaze over an oil stain. The directions on the glaze read that you should wait 24 -48 hours before applying water based glaze over an oil stain. My next question {I’m sure there will be a series of questions} is: do you have to wait that long if you seal the the stain with shellac before glazing? It’s been about 6 hrs since staining.
