does anyone have any tips on installing mini barrel hinges – specifically in a pen box? I know it takes a 45 degree bevel but I can’t seem to get the position, depth etc right for the lid to open correctly
Thanks

Gary, I don’t have any specific guidelines, I’ve done it a few times, but it was mostly just “trial and error”. In the one linked below I had to get pretty close to the edge, and yes, I had to put a small 45 degree bevel…if I recall correctly I think it was just over 1/8 inch wide.

I hope this helps…barrel hinges in pen box

Gary, I use these things ALL the time, and on many pen boxes. I drill the holes about 1/4” in from the edge. When I bevel the edge I go just a “hair” past the center of the hole from the outside edge. Seat the hinge so the hinge pin is even with the wood and only the round part is showing. And make sure the hinge is perpendicular to the box edge. Let the epoxy dry before you attach the top. Since nothing is perfect in this world, I always make the pen boxes a little larger. After the glue sets up I true everything up as one unit.

I also find that it is more comfortable to take the pens out of the box if the pen slots are 3/4” from the hinge edge of the box. Good luck ….....

Odie – thanks for the tip. Your instructions were graet and I was able to position the hinges the 1st time I tried. I hinged 4 pen boxes in no time at all. I’ll be off to buy more hinges tomorrow and load up on boxes. Sure wish I could make a living at this rather than a hobby. Sure would beat working.

Thanks again
