Topic tags/keywords: tablesaw

I was wondering what you LJs think about this http://www.toolking.com/dewalt_dw744r.aspx the reason why I chose this one particuly, is that I thought as I have a birthday coming up it may be time to get myself a table saw. I would appreciate any alternatives or comments/reviews on this item aswel as any better deals that you come across.

Many thanks

Callum

Got it, love it. An awesome upgrade from my $70 delta, the rack and pinion rails/fence adjustment is great, the only negative I’ve read, which hasn’t really effected me, is that the slots for the miter gauge have straight sides, it doesn’t have a track to hold it in and keep it from lifting out.

I also got a better deal at the Big Orange Box than that price a few months back, it just came down from $369, was even 30 cheaper than amazon. (unless this one has a couple extra features mine doesn’t, but at first glance I’d say it’s the same….
Oh, it also can’t accept a dado blade. Not a deal breaker for my portable work saw, but I’d like it for home/hobby use.

Hi Callum;

I really can’t comment on this saw. I am somewhat of a snob regarding tools, especially table saws. But I also don’t know all the circumstances regarding finances etc…

I hope if you purchase it it works well for you.

You may want to check out the jet portable it’s a good price for a good saw.

Kid, that one looks like a good one to start with, you could do a lot worse.

I now own four table saws.

Bought a bench top “King” for a buck at an auction

Wasted 600 bucks on a brand new porta saw that everytime I move it, it looses parts…...I hate that saw and even worse I hate the fact that I bought it.

I picked up an old Rockwell 10” cabinet saw at an auction in mint shape for 600

My advice….........any TS is better then none at all but I hit the auctions and the buy/trade/sell magazines as you can get a “buy once, cry once” machine for a fraction of the cost buying new.

I was looking through a catalogue and regarding what Munnsy said about the jet saw, what do all of you think about this option?

Callum,

Amazon has a reconditioned DW745 for $289.99, and a new one for $369.99. If I had to do it all over again, I would get a new Delta contractor saw.

http://www.amazon.com/Delta-36-977-Horsepower-Contractor-Extension/dp/B000H0VHEG/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1215371028&sr=1-32

It comes with a built in mobile base, and would be very easy for you to grow into. I had a worksite tablesaw once. When I tried to push a long piece of plywood through it, I knocked it over while it was running. Not too safe, and you need to consider your safety formost.
I just checked Grizzly’s website, and their comparable one to the Delta is around the same price, with no mobile base. I think the Delta is your best bet, for safety, and the money.

Callum,

Here is another one. I don’t own any Sunhill Machinery machines. But I know they are a reputable company. Not a bad price either.

Thanks for that Matt, I have the slight problem of having to get it to england. So I have to consider the shipment cost, This is why I am interested in the Dewalt, Delta, Jet as I can get them over here.

You haven’t mentioned space constraints or anything else what would push you into buying a small direct drive saw.

If you have the space get a cabinet saw, search around a bit and you can find used cheap with minimal effort to get it running. Next step down is a good contractors saw. I’m not sure whats available over there but Delta isn’t bad. I have an old Rockwell Model 10 which all the current contractor saws are just a cheaper variant of and it works great for me.

Table saws are things you don’t want to be buying your way up in, take it from me I did it. I could have bought 1 great saw from the price of the 3 it took to get me a good one.
