Hello Everyone
Happy 4th of July

Can I get some opinions on a Dewalt 735 planer, or one of better quality for the same price.
The going rate is $500 for a new one, with a $50 mail in rebate for a Lowes gift card.
I also pulled off the computer a $50 mail in rebate from Dewalt.
Plus I have a $10. off coupon from Home Depot if used between July 17 and Aug 3, 2008 on a purchase of $75. or more, which Lowes will honor.

So What do you think ?
Best regards, Joe Romano

Here are two reviews on this planer that have been posted here:

http://lumberjocks.com/reviews/307

This is a solid planer that has gotten good reviews and with the discounts that you available it sounds like you can get it for a bargain price. Go for it.

Ok ; That’s it I’m sold.
Thank you all.
One last Question.
What’s the opinion on a reconditioned unit from the factory?
It comes with a one tear warrenty.

Oh, and another thing… what do you think about extended warrenty’s for this unit?

Thanks Joe

Joe, I don’t know if you ever served in the military, but Lowes is offering a 10% discount this weekend for anyone who was in the military. To get the discount, you must provide proof of service such as a military ID card or discharge papers. That is a $50 savings on a $500 planer. Hope this helps. pkennedy

I realize that by now you have already purchased your planner. I own one and for the most part am happy with it. I do have issues with the use of realitive cheap plastic inside the unit to direct and discharge the chips. The shrouding around my blower exploded when a knot came loose and bounced around before exiting. Now periodically I have to take the cover off and vacuum the chips. The real big gripe I have is that the blades can not be resharpened. When you weigh in the factor that a set of blades cost $50 that makes the cost of owning this unit very expensive. I think the throw away design is a waste of engineering talent.

Joe.

I have this planer and am very happy with the unit.

I paid $400 for mine by comparing the price at Lowes, then going to Home Depot where they beat the competitors price by 10%. $500 with 10% off is $450, another 10% from Home Depot is $405…then you may be able to send in the $50 rebate ( If it’s a Dewalt rebate )

Terry, you’re right on about the blades, Im on my 4th set year to date. No real damage, just worn dull. I’m toying with the idea of building a fixture to sharpen these, by cutting a slot at 25 degrees deep enough to leave about a 1/8” of the plade standing proud, then simply using the wet ston e to clean up the edges. I haven’t done it yet but $50 to $60 bucks a set saved will be worth the try.

Hey Joe, you might check eBay for this. I bought it from a seller called ‘ToolZone’. They give you the planer, the outfeed and infeed tables, plus a spare set of knives for $549.00 (which is what Amazon and most retailers charge just for the planer). You’ll definitely want the tables for this planer anyway so it seemed like a good deal. They only charged $10 for shipping too!

Good Luck
