Hi:

It seems like various companies that were using Baldor motors on their saws, lathes etc. are now using a different motor manufacurer. Any idea why this is happening ? Is Baldor no longer #1 in small electric motors ?

They are still at the very top of the small electric motor food chain and that is the reason that fewer are used in the machines average woodworkers buy new…price. Also some of the other traditional high quality motor companies have Asian lines as well so for instance Leeson makes some motors in Asia now. It is also a nightmare for a company to ship US motors to Asia for assembly into a machine OR add them when they arrive here.

Point being they are still excellent but putting them on Asian machines is difficult from a logistics point of view and price point as well.

I’m not surprised price is part of what’s at play here. It seems often Leeson is getting used in place of Baldor – but are these Chinese Leeson motors as good as the US made ones ? Maybe it’s too soon to tell.

I am sure its probably due to price. I would imagine Baldor is much more expensive than the Chinese and other off-brand motors. Everyone is trying to keep the price down so they opt for a cheaper motor.
