Topic tags/keywords: resource planer boo-ya well i just brought in another tool. a Delta 12.5 in Benchtop (lunchbox) planer. here is a picture of it right in the box
then i took it out of the box and cleaned off the cutterhead. very little assembly required. a very heavy duty machine and everything seems solid. even the depth handle is very solid.
then here it is in action! this is a great planer and this is not a review or anything. just an initial impression. i will provide a review after i put it through its first big test. - 100 bf of walnut - 100 bf of poplar - 5 bf of soft maple - 45 bf of oak now that is going to be a real test and i should be able to write a review after that. |

Denis, I am starting to get jealous!! ;>) These things make mountains of shavings. It will work your dust collector overtime. One word of advice. I see you checking to be sure the board path is clear. While that is commendable, please be aware that a piece of wood/knot lying inside the planer could get picked up and thrown back at you. If you were looking into the planer at the time.. well I think you get the picture! Lew |

thanks for the tip lew. i was actually looking at the height gauge. its hard to see from above. and i wanted to make sure that i wasn’t going down to low. i need to get out my calipers to check the thickness. |

Good for you Dennis – congrats! I’m thinking, and it’s just a guess, that a dust collector might be next. :-) One other tip——watch those pinch points. It’s easy to get your fingers jammed between the board and your table once the front roller grabs the board. As one who has experienced that first hand, it hurts. Sounds like you have a lot of lumber to plane down. What are you planning on making with it all? -- Betsy - GO BUCKS! |

ya a dust collector is a great thing to have. Trust me, when I got mine the whole way that my shop worked changed. It is twenty times nicer and easier to make things since I installed my Delta 50-760 which by the way I would definitely recommend to you for a dust collector, it has served me well. At the least you should hook up your shop vac to that planner it is making a ton of dust!! -- Tyler, Illinois |

Betsy, the 100 bf of walnut and poplar are for the armoire and dresser. the maple is for a pull out trash can commission. some of the oak if for a shoe chest/bench thing commission. and i’m buying some lumber to meet the 250 bf discount so my parents can save some money. |

Congrats on the new planner. I have one just like it. Ive had it for about 1 1/2years and love it so far. For the money its the best and the blades are a breeze to change and they are double sided, which you will be happy about after milling all that hardwood. -- Steve-o |

I had forgotten about the dress and armoire. It’s a shame that you want to save your parents money by getting more wood. That’s a tough thing to endure, having more wood to work. My oh my Dennis how do you live with yourself—- saving your parents money my foot! :-) -- Betsy - GO BUCKS! |

Hi Denis; Before you know it there won’t be any more tools to buy. Then what? Scary huh? Lee -- by Lee A. Jesberger http://www.prowoodworkingtips.com http://www.ezee-feed.com |

that is a scary thought Lee. then i guess that i can either buy bigger tools or A LOT of wood. get to work with the exotics. for now there’s not much more i can fit in my shop. i might be able to tuck away a dust collector, hollow chisel mortiser, drill press, and mini lathe. but that would really be cramping it. |

Great buy. Way to “save” by buying more lumber. Now you are thinking like a lumberjock. Lee… Not possible. -- -John "Do I have to keep typing a smiley? Just assume it's a joke." www.flickr.com/photos/gizmodyne |

I recently reeived a half a truck of rough cut cedar and sure wish I had one of those to cut down on sanding time. The planer will have to be my next purchase. -- Bill from Lithia Springs, GA I love the smell of sawdust in the morning. |

wow Bill that will be a lot of sanding. i would recommend this planer from my initial impressions. its only 240$ too. it was the lowest prised one that i could find in a retail store that i considered “quality”. i don’t really want to go much lower than this and shipping for a grizzly make it more expensive than this one. i got it at lowes. |

Congradulations, I bought the same planer a few month ago for the very same reason and I haven’t been disapointed. It has a little bit of a issue with snipe but it really isn’t a problem. -- Glenn, New Mexico |
|

ya Bigbuck i noticed that it does have a good amount of snipe but once i have a rough 4/4 10” wide by 8’ long board on a planer sled i don’t think that snipe will be much of a problem. |

By the way dennis you should check amazon, there prices are really good and most of the time they offer free shipping. I got my 100 pound dust collector delivered for free, what would have cost me around 80 bucks! -- Tyler, Illinois |

i think they have that dust collector at the lowes near me. i have never really trusted shipping. haven’t had the best luck with shipping in the past. |

Very nice addition! I am sure you will enjoy it. I look forward to seeing your review on this as I hope to be able to use it as a possible guide. As far as dust collectors, I got a Shop Fox at a local tool store outlet called WorkShopTools From what I understand ShopFox is made by Grizzly. There are several stores in the South East I believe. They have some good prices on some items as well as anyone else I suppose. I wished I had a way to ship one to you. I ran across a delta dust collector yesterday 1.5 hp with 1250cfm rating for $90. I almost bought it just to resale. -- Jerry, Measure 10 times cut once. Set in the foothills of the Smokey's |
