Hi,
I have this Pine tree that died , It is big, 2’6” trunk at bottom, must be 40” tall.
The tree men are coming soon to remove it, does anyone think it would be worth the trouble to have some long pieces rough cut into slabs and dried for lumber?
Pine is not my favorite wood but it just kills me to think good wood will be going into the fire.
Here is a PIC,

The one trunk is sort of twisted but the other is fairly straight.
Any input will be apreciated.

Pine’s pretty-cheap. Not sure I’d go through the trouble of cutting and drying it. Just my opinion, though.

I’m thinking firewood. The right tree is pretty twisted so anything you get out of that would be pretty short. The left tree might get you some good length boards. But like Greg said, pine is pretty cheap. By the time you pay to have the tree felled and then hauled off and milled, then allow it to dry (or pay to have it kiln dried). It adds up pretty quick.

I think it will be more suited to firewood.

The other option is maybe to get some turning blocks out of it if you do any lathe work. I’m not sure though how good green pine turns.

Good luck.

Be careful burning pine in a fireplace. It will create creosote on the chimney and cause a chimney fire.

Humm didn’t know that about burning pine in the fireplace. Thanks for letting us know.

Ditto Trifern, not all pine makes a good firewood.

We had a BUNCH of pine trees removed months ago. They are still oozing sap. I burn them.

I would not try to make boards out of them, not much yield. Also, I would not worry so much about the creosote when you burn pine, but I would worry about the popping of the sap when it burns. Makes hot ambers fly everywhere. Be careful.

The only way I would try and slab it is if I cut into it and it had bore holes or some unique feature all thru it, that would make it worth a unique project. Other than that, I’d burn it… not in the fireplace tho.
