Topic tags/keywords: purpleheart question

I have two nice pieces of purple heart, measuring 1-7/8×3-1/2×52 and 1-7/8×9-5/8×51-3/4. I am looking for project ideas. I do want to make a hand plane (at least the sole) but I would like to pick your collective brains for other ideas. Thanks in advance for sharing your ideas.

It makes great accent pieces for cutting boards or even a complete end grain board if you want to use it that way.

I like to use purple heart for making lettering. Cuts well on my scroll saw and shows up well.

Basically an accent wood in my eyes . I have used it almost extensively for cutting boards and small projects like this :

I made a scrub plane out of purple-heart, and have plans to use the left-overs to make a mallet for chiseling and a small hammer for adjusting my wooden planes…however, after that, I have sworn never to buy it again!

It’s just too hard, and the grain on my pieces is crazy… difficult to plane a smooth finish, and sanding takes forever.

Sorry it took me a while to respond. My wife and I escaped for a week. Now I’m back in the shop.

Thanks for the ideas. I like 12strings’ idea to make a mallet. I figure that purple heart would be good for that. I am also thinking about making handles for my carving chisels. Comments on chisel handles?

I also like the idea of accent pieces in cutting boards. I haven’t made a cutting board yet but I like that idea.

Have your say...
