I've created 2 "LumberJocks Jocks Directory" pdf files.

The first, the "basic", is text only and looks like this…
Rectangle Font Parallel Screenshot Software

The second, the "pretty", contains text and jock avatars and looks like this…
Photograph Facial expression Product Human Font

In both cases the "Jock" is, of course, a clickable link that takes you to that jock's page on this site.

Why, I hear you ask, would you possibly want this?

Well - I quite often see people asking questions like "are there any other jocks in Texas?", or, "I wonder how many Torontans there are?", or "Are there any jocks in Cuba?" and, "I was wondering how many jocks there are in Portugal".
Finding this information is quite difficult - there are over 1200 pages of jocks, and, frankly, this kind of search doesn't work very well.

These documents, being pdf, allow you to do those searches with ease.

They can be found here on MediaFire, weighing in at…
"Basic" - 426 pages for only 2M (also available on GoogleDocs)
"Pretty" - 651 pages for 51M

Please note - I extracted the data only from the first 650 pages of jocks (35 per page), when sorted by "most active" - after that are only people who've never said anything, and spammers.

In case you were wondering, but don't want to download - over 400 in Texas (guys & gals - have a party), 25 in Toronto, none in Cuba, and only 11 in Portugal (one of whom is me).

Please also note - text searching is text searching - some people put "Tx", some put "Texas", and if they've mis-spelled it as "Texus", then you won't find it. But all you Texans can rest easy - I checked - no-one has put in their location as "Texus". But a special thanks to "TexasSteve" (in Kansas), who shows up if you search for "TexAss".

Feedback always welcome.

I didn't realize how many people have never posted anything.

I would suggest stopping when you find one post. That would make the list more manageable. I found that in some cases the one post is posting their profile and then responding on their profile.

We don't lose much if we lose them.

That would put the one with picture around 460 pages.

"Temporarily Unavailable"…
Please let me know if the problem continues and I can upload them somewhere else as well.

I would suggest stopping when you find one post
Fair comment - when/if I do a new version I'll probably go with that.

KnickKnack:

You might try GoogleDocs… it's free… I don't think there is a limit either… Harry uses them for all of his PDF's…

I'm not sure how to do a search after I've down loaded it ?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with non-Macs, but your PDF viewer, be it Acrobat, Preview (on a Mac) etc should have some kind of "find" function for searching for text.

I find this kind of information fascinating, so I massaged the lists you provided to learn what I could.

The LumberJocks website "Location" field is un-editted text, not data. People can (and do) put anything they like into that field. About 43% of the time, its either blank or provides no useful information. Still, the remainder provides some interesting tidbits.

There are LumberJocks in 93 countries. The top 10 are:

USA 10713
Canada 769
England 179
Australia 169
South Africa 43
New Zealand 39
Ireland 33
China 28
Belgium 27
France 27

Of course, the US and Canada have the most LumberJocks. Top 5 states in the US are:

CA 897
TX 821
NY 498
FL 464
OH 441

Top three provinces in Canada are:

Ontario 284
British Columbia 158
Alberta 92

I'm sure there's lots more to learn here. Wish there was an easy way to "download" the members list as data whenever we wanted. It's be nice to get updated stats once a year or so.

…some interesting tidbits
Indeed.
Gotta love data!

I think 93 countries surprised me most - without getting into the politics of Taiwan etc etc, there are around 19x countries - so that's at least one person from nearly half the countries in the world - pretty amazing.

Actually, what would be really great is if you made the raw data available somewhere as an Excel file, which would allow folks to sort by the various fields, i.e. location, name, # posts, etc.

I'm not a great fan of Excel (an understatement), but I've made the file into tab-text, which you can import into a spreadsheet or database of your choosing. It's in the same folder as the other files with the inspirational name "JocksListPagesTabText.txt"

Format is…
LJ URL<tab>Nick<tab>Location<tab>Posts

Wouldn't it all be easier if someone would simply start a forum thread, where a member could post " Hi, I'm Larry from Dubuque, Iowa and I want to chat/meet other woodturners from Dubuque" ? This way, the woodworkers wishing to connect with others based on geographic location, or other parameters, without contacting those who perhaps have no interest in going person-to-person. Anyone? Get it started!

Wouldn't it all be easier …
Sure would Mr Kat.
But where's the fun in that?

Butt joints with nails are easier than, well, just about anything… :)

The only thing you should be careful of is: "You agree to not use the Service to: ... collect or store personal data about other users." in the ToS

Now that's an excellent point!
So now I've read the ToS, which seem to be from September 2008

…create derivative works…
Ummm, think I might fall foul of that one.

I will, of course, remove all these files on request from an appropriate party.
