Topic tags/keywords: plane

First I wanted to point out that today its been a year since I joined LJs. Wish I had been more active, but haven’t had the place to do work.

Friday I went to a tag sale at the house of a former editor for FWW. He posted photos on his Craigslist ad about it with a ton of different hand planes, other hand tools and some good books.

I wasn’t able to get it there until late in the day, when I did get there I was able to find a few good things. First box I went through was a bunch of planes. The only two decent ones left were a brand (Record) I had little knowledge of just basing my purchase off the decision that they were probably decent. They both need some cleaning up and tuning but overall are in very good shape. There was also a old Bedrock jack plane, but was missing the tote and knob and at this point it was just too much for me.

60 1/2 block plane

No. 5 jack plane

I haven’t had a chance to date them yet, but I think they are slightly post WW2.

There had also been a few hand saws covered in rust with some slight cracking through the handles. I passed over them at first, but it wasn’t until after another browser’s dog knocked over the box they were on I realized that they were Disston’s. May never really need or use them, but I wasn’t gonna leave them.

They originally wanted $10 for each plane $1 for each saw. I paid $20 for all 4 pieces. Overall a pretty good haul.

got to use the no 5 yesterday. It was some PT 2×6 so i wasn’t too concerned about it coming out perfect so figured id try out the plane even though i hadn’t done any rehabbing to it. realistically the blade probably could use a hone/sharpen, but damn did it feel nice to use it.

Loving the lamb’s tongue handle on the lower saw. Hopefully the sawplate isn’t too pitted once you get the rust encrustation off of it. If so, it will make a fine user.

Your experience mirrors my own. If you want a chance at the good stuff, you have to be one of the first ones there. However, better prices await you when you go later. Going later has paid off for me too when I find a treasure that others don’t realize was a great find under the coating of rust.

Happy hunting!
