Topic tags/keywords: question

Just bought 5 Spalted sycamore bowl blank 5×5x3 and I’m going to cut them into thin panels ,About ¼” to 3/8” but the real beautiful spalting is with the crosscut , do you think that I could use these crosscut panels or would they be to breakable? They would only be supported with came in a stain glass type lamp shade. Wood came that I would make not lead came. Here is a example.

Are you asking about “end grain” or “edge grain” on a 5×5 square block ?

Not that I know the difference but I would say end grain, I’m talking about a thin crosscut of the spalted sycamore block 1/4 to 3/8 thick .It will be cut across the grain not with it.

That should be end grain if you’re cutting across the grain and not with the grain : )
You won’t know until you cut it how strong it will be , but I would think that 3/8” would be able to take any stresses that come with being a lamp shade.
