George Washington, where art thou? John Adams, where have you gone?

I’m sure I’m not alone when I long for a President, or statesman, the caliber of George Washington or John Adams, to guide this country through it’s problems, and dealing with the world and it’s dangers.

This is not a diatribe against the current President, only a pining for a quality of leadership, and quality of person, we found in Washington and Adams. I don’t really see that in the Presidential candidates of today, nor in any others statesman of this day.

There are so many complicated and dangerous issues out there for the United States today, I just would hope that God would send us a person of the founding father’s character to navigate her through the dark and dangerous waters that lie before her.

Is this a universal longing for ‘better’ leaders? or is the world just such a more complicated place that it is hard for anyone to stand out.

I know next to nothing about your current politicians so do not mean to slight them in anyway…come to think of it I know very little about our politicians also….hmmm maybe I should get a radio and listen to the news in the shop…nahh real life is too close somedays anyway, that is why I have the shop…

back to sticking my head in the sawdust….

MSKI, while Washington did own slaves, he did treat them well, and released them upon his death. John Adams never did own slaves, and in fact, out rightly detested it. Adams was not rich, not even “well off”. Washington had money, primarily due to marrying a rich widow.

Both men were patriots, and new what hard work and honor were.

How they exploited women, I have no idea. John Adams depended tremendously upon his wife for counsel.

I can see you don’t know much about American History.

I bet Washington would be aghast at many of our modern cultural norms, the piercing, tattoos, unwed sex, single parents, drive by shootings, and I can go on and on. You can try to measure someone by todays measuring stick and they will always fall short, due to cultural differences in the times. What was quite normal and pedestrian back then makes us moderns (somewhat rightly) ashamed if we can trace our lineage back to the Daughters of the Revolution. I would guess that there are some cultural norms for you that Washington would find shocking. As for women that too is much older than the founders of the republic, may guess is you can try caveman. But the man did lay the foundation where eventually man no longer referred to one sex of our species but to (all of) our species itself.

Not trying to offend you and your rights to speak and thoughts, nor do wish for the de-suffrage of women or support slavery in any way. Just as it that it was a different day and time.

Washington INHERITED slaves when he was ten years old. He had an aversion to slavery and Mt Vernon was in financial ruin because of the number of slaves he had. He would not sell them. He would not break up families. And The state would not allow him to give emancipate them freely.

As to women voting, there were men who could not vote either because they held NO ownership to property. Thus they did not have a stake in the process. As today too many people VOTE away things from the FEW who have. Take from the rich is the new form of government.

Just locally a community of home owners vote to say one person cannot build a workshop in his backyard, because they don’t like the idea and the noise. Yet they cannot stop him from converting his garage to one.
Hehehe!! As long as the power tools stop at 11:00pm. But I also have a basement for a late nighter.

they were great leaders but in there time. times have changed and not saying that they would not be great leaders now but they would probably have changed with the times and would be different people and leaders now.. you can’t really compare them to modern day much.

Thanks, Mike for extending my knowledge of Washington, and the women voting issue. If that other guy thinks women had it bad THEN, he should go to an arab nation and see how women have it NOW.

teenagewoodworker – the point is the character of the man; his integrity, morals and values. That’s what we are missing today. Back in the day of Washington, Adams and Jefferson, it would have been uncouth to declare yourself a Presidential candidate; instead, they relied on others to essentially draft them.
