Topic tags/keywords: sketchup

I’ve been using SU for about 3 months now, and have become pretty handy with it. However, I cannot seem to “explode” my project. Users of SU will know what I mean.

I tried a plugin, found here.

Couldn’t get it to work – thru any combination of groups or components – not that the directions were that clear.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? They have another script there on Smustard, but it’s $20, and I don’t know if it works….

Honestly, I do my parts measuring and project “explosions” manually. I looked at the Smustard scripts, but wasn’t willing to pay the $ to try them. I generally save the file under a new name and then tear it apart for measurements and such.

Pretty much the same as I do… easy if you group your parts, or make components out of them

Hi Patrick,

I’m not sure that Exploder is the script you want for the application. I haven’t tried it but from the brief description, it doesn’t sound like what you need for your application. If you want to use a plugin to create exploded views, you should look at ExplodeImplode from Smustard.com. I have used it and although I don’t find it totally intuitive, it does work well. I don’t use it often enough to remember how to make it go so for the rare times when I want an exploded view, I do it manually.

My normal method for this is to copy (Ctrl+Move) the entire model off to one side and then disassemble it. I generally make different scenes for smaller collections of components as I go. This makes it easier to show detail when printing the scenes or sending to Layout. Aview of the entire model space then looks like a tornado has ripped through and scattered parts all over.

You absolutely need to use coponents and/or groups to make the exploded views. I never use groups for project parts, though. I only use components.

I have asked the same question some time ago http://lumberjocks.com/topics/3604. deltxguy made a plugin that makes cutlist which helps a little. I think he intends to add to it the functionality of making the cutlist in sketchup world.
