Topic tags/keywords: pacific cascara hand tools novice question

Has anyone here made lumber from basically firewood? I’m obviously not talking build a house lumber, just stuff big enough to make small boxes and stuff with. I have some Cascara that’s 16” long, and I’ve split some off with my axe, wedges, and froe, now I’m attempting to saw it straight and get it planed up. It’s some work let me tell you, since I don’t have a bandsaw, nor the money get one, so its mostly hand work.

I get most of the material I use for turnings from firewood. I have made boards from deadfall or firewood before as well. I’ve made a few small items, and they have turned out well… I’ve been very fortunate to find some great pieces of wood from the wood pile. Having a bandsaw does make it a lot easier though.

There is the occasional post about a project including wood saved from a fiery end to its existance.

Personally, I’ll have to get back to you. I picked up a piece earlier this week that I was going to use for one thing, but I like it enough that i may just try using it for a bandsaw box instead.

just type firewood in the LJ search box. The firewood projects are most plentiful. Enjoy.

I’ve never made lumber from firewood, but I’ve made a lot of firewood from lumber! :-)

Most of my mesquite stash comes from firewood. But, I’d never attempt it without a band saw. My hat’s off to you. Doing it by hand??? Now, that’s a LOT of work!
