Hello. I am building my first table out of hickory. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to join the boards together? It is a small table 40”x40” with 2 chairs made out of Hickory. I will be using 1×5’s & I dont know if I should Bisket Joint,Dowel,or Toung & Groove them together or does it Matter?

i would just regular edge glue them. maybe a few biscuits would help for alignment but where the glue is stronger than the wood the biscuits won’t make really any difference in strength. haven’t tried tongue and groove on a tabletop?

I agree with teenagewoodworker. As long as you have straight true edges, and clamp it straight, it will work great. Cauls are a good idea to keep things aligned. Hard to get used to the idea that good glue is stronger than wood.

Keep us posted.

Yep – unless you need some help with alignment, I’d skip the biscuits. Edge gluing, if you have good, clean, straight edges is the way to go, fast and easy. T&G will give you more gluing surface, but for such a small table, it’s probably overkill.

When clamping your top, don’t over do the clamping pressure and bow your table top with the clamps. Like Rob said, using cauls helps.

ditto. if you have a good edge, just glue them up using some cauls to keep everything straight.

I use bisquits in most of my glue ups just to help keep them straight.
