OK – I think I have to come to the realization that woodworking is going to have to wait a bit until I get this darn thing in my neck fixed. I used to do a lot of needle work and got bored with it. But I’m thinking that while I’m waiting to feel better than I can make some needle projects that I can use in future woodworking projects. I experimented a bit last night and I can hold a needle in my right hand and can even do it left handed—- which is amazing to me. Those needles are small! Anyway, I’m thinking box lids, serving trays, etc.

So all you guys with wives, girlfriends, or maybe even yourself (yes guys do do needle work and do a great job of it) what projects have you done to incorporate needle work.

As to box lids, etc. how do you mount the fabric into the lid? I’m assuming it’s best to cover with glass.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think the lids could be made with a recess on top, deep enough to allow the fabric to sit, protected on the top. If glass is used to cover it, the recess could be deeper and a “trim” piece added to hold the glass in place.

As far as holding it in place, I think Gary used spray adhesive and a piece of cardboard to hold materials on the bottom of his boxes. Maybe that would work.

Betsy,

I am sure that Gary's method would work for doing something like this.

A few years back I made a comment to my mother. She has always been an excellent seamstress and now does needlepoint work. At the time she was working on a large needle (24×36) point of the alphabet with beeds and cute little pictures and I said

“Whats the big deal Mom”

Now my mother never swears or at least I thought she never swore and said “If its no big deal then why dont you do one @$$&*!#”..............so I did.

One year later I finished “a” needle point and now have a fond appreciation of the craft and have since apologized for the very rude comment.

If I was going to mount needle craft and I wanted it to really last I would mount it with archival materials otherwise the acid from said materials will yellow the needlework.

Betsy,
My Mom has done single strand silk needlework for years. I have a series of long stem roses, each in a different color that she has given me. I treasure them and an terrified of doing something wrong. Due to how it has to be done I have all of my mounting done by a framing shop that specializes in needlework. There are quite a few steps they go through, to do it right. If you find out how to mount it properly I would appreciate learning myself.

Ed—I’ll let you know what I come up with.

I have to admit the needlework gets boring for me. I’ve not gotten much done. Just not as exciting as woodworking.
