Topic tags/keywords: question milling

Is there a conventional thickness for a box for jewelry of flatware? At this time the outside is 15 inches wide, 13 inches deep, and 6 inches high. I am thinking 5/8” or 1/2” dimension.

I make a lot of boxes, and for the overall dimensions you’re talking about, I find 1/2” stock looks best. Of course it is all a matter of taste. If you search for boxes on this site, you’ll find beautiful pieces made from thicker stock as well.

I would not got more than 1/2”, but I tend to go with 3/8” for projects like this. But Like Charlie said, it really is a matter of taste.

Call me over-kill … with something that size I tend to go with 3/4”. O K there you go all sizes heard from … now what do you do?

If you’re like me, you will be your most critical judge of anything that you build. If it looks good to you it will look good to others. You have to build to what is pleasing to the eye, and it starts with yours.

i usually use 1/2” but in some smaller jewelry boxes 3/8” would be better. it depends though. really just judge it on your piece.

Thanks everyone..

As you said Odie, all bases covered.

The reason I posted the question was I did a search on boxes and there were hardly any with dimensions listed. I will try to list the dimensions on my next project, because I noticed I was one of the biggest offenders.

Thanks again.
