I’ve just started using my new Delta 1/2 hp hollow chisel mortiser. I’ve gone through and tuned it a la Wood Whisperer and sharpened and honed my chisels on both the outside and inside (using the LV cone sharpeners). It’s mortising a lot better than when I tried it out of the box, but I’m still not all that happy with the results.

Many have pointed out the chisels themselves are mediocre. Has anyone upgraded to the Lee Valley or other brand chisels on the Delta? How much of a difference do they make? They start at $42 for the 1/4” and go up from there, so replacing a set of 4 would be cost me another $175 or so.

^I upgraded from the standard JET ones to a mildly upgraded ShopFox set. I’m not thrilled with either, to be honest. I don’t have any experience with the really good ones. I’d rather spend a couple hundred dollars on some mortise chisels and go back to chopping by hand. I think I just expected more out of my JET mortiser, maybe too much. Unless I’m using pine, it just doesn’t seem to save me any time.
