Topic tags/keywords: question joint repair

I need to repair the joint between the trestle legs and table top. It looks as though the screw holes have been ovalized from long time leveraging from the table top.

There is no glue on this joint, though there is on the trim/braces tableleg

I think I need to fill in the holes. Would drilling them out and fitting hardwood dowel work? Or a better idea?

This is my first post, registered earlier today and alread have about 4 or 5 ‘welcomes’! Thanks!

You might try going to the next larger size screw. You may have to plug them to redrill and counter sink the holes again.

You might also want to scrub down that joint with some acetone, to make sure there is no glue on it, and glue and screw it back together.

I can’t tell the size of the holes but you could glue tooth picks or dowels in the holes and use the original screws.

I think the idea of using a hardwood dowel to fill the existing holes is a great start. That would leave your options wide open for the rest of the effort while preserving the integrity of the wood.

I agree with the hardwood dowel idea. I have repaired many furniture pieces, and I feel better gluing in the dowels so you can ‘start over’ and make new holes.

hardwood dowel and epoxy. Then you can redrill them to the proper size.

From the looks of your pieces, they aren’t position dependent. Yes you can plug them and redrill but it won’t be as ‘good’ as original wood. Plug then if you like but why not just clean up the surfaces, reglue and move the screws to a new locations?

Unless this is an antique or something of value, it’s not going to affect the usability of the piece.

Just thoughts.

Hardwood dowels and epoxy, then you don’t need to be real finiky about removing old glue.
