I found this Disston D-23 saw, this morning, at a yard sale for $5. Some of you that are more familiar with saws than I am, please tell me if I made a good purchase. The pictures are just as i brought the saw home. There is some light ruse and what looks like paint splatters on the blade. The handle could use some oil. The blade is sharp, with no missing teeth.

I am thinking a little mineral spirits might be enough to clean the blade and remove the rust.

Will mineral spirits damage the blade or the etching?

So, what do you think? Did I get a good deal?

NO! Crappy saw. Send it to me. I’ll give ya $7.00 + shipping. You’ll NEVER be able to rehab that junk.
You had BETTER know that I am very envious. Great find, and ya did good.

Looks like a good deal to me. A few months ago I bought one that appears to be just like that one for $6. It had already been cleaned up and was very sharp so it was worth the extra $1. I use it quite a bit.

hey there tim, it looks like a good find to me, the etching is in pretty good shape, just be very careful with what you use , dont mess up the words there, i see folks clean there rusting things with electrolysis…you would have to look on line on how to do it, unless you already know…but good find says me…im in the works of making pen boxes out of heart pine…so its coming along…have a good weekend…bob

I have plans to build an electrolysis chamber. Just not very high on the list yet.

The saw is 10 tpi. Fortunately the paint splatters were on the tip, away from the etching and handle. Mineral Spirits took the paint off. The worst of the rust on on the back side.

Like I said the saw is sharp. I just cut a 2×4 with it. Cuts like butter.

Looks like I need to build a saw till. This is my 3rd Disston. I also have a 5 1/2 tpi and 7 1/2 tpi. This one is the most expensive, so far. The other two I paid $2 a piece for.

BILL: Put a nice number on either side of that 7 and we might have a deal. 8-)
