Topic tags/keywords: burl wood mall

So, it’s the wife’s birthday. She’s at the mall, Coldwater Creek woman’s store, looking at clothes. I’m standing in front of this 8 ft tall and 3 ft wide 4” thick slab of some kind of wood. I actually see it with an aura around it. The rest of the store is diminished in it’s presence even if the clothes are sherbert ice cream colored. Don’t know for sure what it is but it’s upright, naturally shaped, not cut, with some bark on one edge. polished and varnished and running from top right corner to left bottom corner is a wide swath of beautifully convoluted burl. It was being used as a backdrop for some clothes.
A woman who works at the store comes up to me and says, “like the wood?” I indicate that I do some woodworking and see a coffee table. She says, “My husband is a woodworker too, He sees a bar.” I asked her “how much”. She smiled and said that her husband already made her try to buy it from the company. No sale.

I wish I had had a camera… what a shame to use it as a mall store prop. Ah well. I’ll bet you it goes into a dumpster during the next seasonal remodel….. sigh…..

-- The smell of wood, coffee in the cup, the wife let's me do my thing, the lake is peaceful.

Happy birthday to the wife, I know the feeling, and I have seen beautiful pieces of wood that end up in the dumpster. Many years ago, whenever I fou d a store going out of business I would check back every few days , you would be surprised what I pulled out of dumpsters and are now some of mine and my moms furniture.
