It’s not all that infrequent that our church gets presented with families in dire straits, from families that have suffered a complete loss of home and property due to either natural disaster (tornado, hurricane etc…) or most recently fire.
The Men’s ministry has been knocking this problem around, and there are a few of us in the congregation that are hobby woodworkers that would love to help, and even more that would be willing to throw in some labor but lack anything beyond basic build a deck skills…
So we are looking for furniture plans that meet the following criteria…
#1. Are easy to build by someone with basic woodworking skills. #2. Can be built with what can be sourced from Home Depot, or Lowes type stores. Think 2×4 cutoffs and plywood for example… #3. Can be knocked down, or at least final glue up / finishing of pre done segments just prior to delivery.
Table designs are a dime a dozen, so we don’t really need help with those, but where we need help mostly is…
#1. Bed frames. Particularly safe bunk bed designs. A good number of these families have multiple children, and are forced to at least for a while move into small apartments meaning kids need to be stacked… #2. Chairs. Seems like the easy to build variety also are horribly uncomfortable. Any suggestions? #3. Chest of drawers.
Mind you, we don’t want to just cobble together something ugly, but we also don’t want to spend the time building masterpieces either… We want good, sturdy, welll, although we aren’t a Shaker congregation, think form and function of Shaker furniture maybe…
As always budget is a huge concern (church project, no budget so this will have to come from donations, or digging quarters out from the sofa…)
Good thing I don’t have to get an answer back for 2 weeks.. I have too many other projects going right now!
