I have a ceiling hoist and it gave out on me today doing
routine stuff with it. I noticed the switch unit (it’s a
banana colored thing on a coiled cord attached to the
hoist with a 3-way switch and a solenoid in it) got warm
underneath the switch itself.

Anybody got a clue on diagnosing this?

The hoist is not worth enough to send out for repair
I think but if I can figure out what needs replacing
I could do it myself and avoid junking the thing.

From the way you’re describing it, it sounds like a relay, rather than a solenoid, to take the brunt of the arcing, rather than the switch contacts. I would suspect the relay is your problem. If you can take it apart, you may be able to file the relay contacts and be back in business.

Duh – not a solenoid – its a capacitor. I got the terms mixed
up.

Have your say...
