Hi All,

Do any of you kind folks on here remember the last time everyone got mean and nasty here on the forums a few years ago? I do. We lost the Break Time forum. That was what the off topic forums used to be called.

Maybe it’s time the non shop talk forum went away too.

So disheartening to see what all the politics, and religion bring folks to on both sides of any of the running nasty arguments on here.

I know that if any two of us were introduced to each other in a pub by a mutual friend would probably get along just fine as we have a common interest. Woodworking.

I know I’m rambling on a bit here, and I’m sure I’ve probably offended someone here in the the past, but how about we kill the WAY OFF topic threads and start learning from each other?

Just my rambling off topic thoughts.

Hey Mike
I believe the old forum was called the coffee lounge. The non shop talk forum could go away and I would never miss it but when we didn’t have it people would still post the same topics without it a specific forum for non shop talk. So I really don’t see what deference it makes either way.

I know that if any two of us were introduced to each other in a pub by a mutual friend would probably get along just fine as we have a common interest. Woodworking.

But getting rid of “non shop talk” would be like the mutual friend saying “oh, and the only thing you two are allowed to talk about is woodworking”. Not music, not motorbikes, not your family, not any of your experiences, not any other of your common interests…. – just woodworking.
Which, you must admit, would be weird.
Once in a while there are some disagreements, but, imo, the pluses outweigh the occasional problems.

Good memory Jim, it was the coffee lounge. I remember the time you are talking about Mike. I believe Martin felt that LJs had come to a form of crossroads. He didn’t really want the site to be another social network and wanted the emphasis to be about woodworking, so the coffee lounge was removed. The problem, I think, is that you can’t really change human nature. Instead of non shop related items being sort of herded to a separate forum section, we started seeing more blogs and forums containing political rants and there were some woodworkers who wanted to talk about hobbies, family, and other items that were expressing confusion on where to post those things. I think that turned into an administrative nightmare. So I think the premise here is that you can’t change people, but you can at least direct them to a specific location.

The bottom line is that the less wholesome aspects of the virtual world will be there. In the long run, it might be better to have a designated place where you can tell yourself “Don’t go there” than to be surprised with it when reading a blog about finishing that suddenly turns into a lecture on how some political party or another is destroying the country.

Just my two cents.
