Topic tags/keywords: question

I have a 200 year old house which, among other things, needs new windows and doors.

I watched a “New Yankee Workshop” episode where he builds a beutiful mahogany exterior door. Simple, elegant and well within my skill set.

The Windows, on the other hand, are causing more of a problem.

The openings in this house are very (and I mean VERY) irregular in shape (IE: not square at all). I’ve had several “specialists” (brain-dead lackies more like it) try to estimate for vynil, plastic and metal replacements. Might as well buy a new house, they cost so much!

SO…

Lets make a window! Except, do you think, with all of the wonderous plans on the net, SOMEONE would have a set, even a rough outline even, as to how to make a window? Nope! Not that I can find.

I could just throw something together, model a wood window off of the aluminum ones I have (which are very ugly), but I want to see other ideas!

Has anyone come across design specs, plans, finger paintings of window design? Or do you have any suggestions on where to start a design?

Thanks :)

I can tell you that you should model off of the originals. Wood frames, measured to match, and just sub in thermal panes for the float glass.

You could also cheat- rout the old glass out, make new trim, and replace the glass with thermals.

Rail & stile bits will make it easy

Sorry- I missed the note that you have aluminum. You should model after a neighbour that has originals. You could also visit some old historic homes and make some rough templates for the correct profile, and have the cutters made at a machine shop

You could buy one wooden window of the type you want and take it apart and copy it.

You might be ably to get it cheap if they are trying to dump it because it was the wrong size, customer didn’t pick it up…

I’m thinking that if you have aluminum windows, you can probably find some wooden replacement windows that are close enough to fit it the openings. I installed Pela and Andersen windows in my 75 year old house. I was able to find some that would just fit in the original casing after the sashes were taken out. I took out the original sill and made the casing into a box. I added a fake sill after the windows were installed. You’re still looking at around $300 a piece, but it would be quicker than building them.
There are several books out that you can Google that will tell you how to construct the old type windows.

All very good comments! Thanks.

After a day or so I found a site that had basic design specs for dual-sash windows (www.sashwindowspecialist.co.uk) along with a few others.

So I’m going to have a stab at building one or two and see how it goes!

Try these guys… www.hullmillwork.com ... and navigate to their newsletters where you can download them in .pdf and sign up for future ones. Some good historical info and drawings of windows, etc.

always,

Take a walk around second hand timber yards. If you find what you want you do as GaryK says & buy one & copy it or if the dealer is agreeable you could tke some pics & measurements. I recently made some plantation shutters, could not find any plans. Took my wife along to the ‘windows & blinds’ shop. While she kept the shop assistant busy I took a few measurements. LOL

Hey jcees….the link you posted doesn’t work. Can you repost it please?

I did exactly that Grumpy. But it was an aluminum window store. Didn’t have to “distract” anyone. The manager let me back into the shop to measure a disassembled model!! Nice guy!

I now have a miniature, modified version drawing of a sash window. Good thing I paid attention in drafting class. I’m making a digital version now to include a Google Sketchup 3D scale perfect model of it. I’ll post the results here when I’m done.

Thanks for all of the comments guys. Immensly helpful!
