I am thinking about making a photo album with leather for the hinges. Anyone have the best solution for attaching the leather to the wood cover? If glued what would be the best glue to use?

John, I’ve used several adhesives with leather. I would suggest you do a mockup and try yellow glue and see what you think.

This will also give you a chance to see how the edges of the leather look (if any are exposed in your design).

I like the way yellow works, but it is hard to get the margins of the leather to adhere without glue staining the wood there. Perhaps if that line were masked it would help.

I have also used contact cement with good results, though the leather sometimes needs three coats or more.

Perhaps in your experimenting you’ll come up with something new and better!

How do rivets sound to you. A simple riveting device doesn’t cost much. If the rivets don’t look nice to you, you can fold the leather so as to hide them or paint the heads to match the color of the leather.

I agree with Ed. Rivets. You could add a little glue with them

I have attached leather to wood while making many fireplace bellows. I used white glue (dries clear) and brass tacks.

Yellow wood glue and brass rivets look great.

I did a little search and came upon what they call the Chicago screw or screw post. These are used basically in folder bindings. Several websites offer them. Check them out.
