Topic tags/keywords: question oak finishing

Hi, I need some advice. We have had so many problems redoing our stairtreads. We took them all off and was even using a ladder to go up and down for weeks! Anyway, the bottom line is I have put 6 coats of Tung Oil on the treads. And yes it is PURE Tung oil. I bought it special at a woodworker store. I really want to finish this job and walk up and down the stairs – it’s been a month already. So, should I just stop and be finished or is there something I can do to get a bit of a shine to them. I can not be around chemicals, so I need a safe recommendation, both in smells and safety for walking on and not slipping on them.

Thank you for any help you give me.

Once they have dried you could use a wated based poly that is rated for flooring. Probably take a while to dry that much oil properly. Min. of a week, maybe longer? Good luck.
