Topic tags/keywords: question

I have noticed that there has been a lot of talk about the plywood “quality” at big box stores such as Home Depot and Lowes and i was wondering if anyone thought that that was also present in the MDF. i just want to see because my lumber yard has some real nice looking MDF but its for about 20 dollars more than the stuff at home depot. i wasn’t sure if i should get it at home depot or go for the lumberyard MDF.

I think your big box store MDF is just fine. I’ve not gotten a bad piece from there, nor have I heard anything bad about MDF from the big boxes. With that said, you can always look for the dinged edges, and or water spots. Other than that, I think you are good to go.

Sometimes you can find dinged goods at reduced prices. It pays to check if they have a ding area. Sometimes you can get what you need for a project for next to nothing.

I haven’t use the “box stores” MDF, but have looked at it when shopping. It looks fine and I don’t see why there would be any problems. I think most of the plywood problems come from imports. With the MDF being so heavy, I think they get it in the states.

Fortunately, MDF is pretty-consistent no matter where you buy it. Throw enough glue and sawdust together with heat and pressure and you’ll get a decent panel. A lumber yard might be able to get you some of the lightweight MDF you won’t find at the big stores, but the regular MDF should be about identical.

I’ve used MDF from the big box stores. I didn’t have any problems. I sometimes will see a little ding on a corner or edge, but since a 4’ x 8’ sheet of MDF actually measures 49” x 97”, a little ding can usually be cut off. It’s nice to be able to cut a piece perfectly in half and still have slightly more than 24” wide panels.
