Since I make and sell wooden bookmarks I guess it is a given that I like to read a lot. So I am on Amazon and other sites that sell books, especially woodworking books. Amazon.com has a really cool wireless reading device called “Kindle” and a way to instantly get $30.00 to spend on any Amazon.com product. I really like the idea of the Kindle especially since anytime I have an appointment with anyone they seem to make me wait in there office and read People magazine or Good Housekeeping. I don’t think the Kindle will put me out of the Bookmark Business yet but I think things like that will certainly be more common soon. Check it out.

Who gets to “Kindle” all the books and references?
What about magazines and news?
Neat idea but with specific titles only it will soon fall on it’s own sword.

Bob, Just like most information technology it will have its own niche and limitations. It is a tool and like most tools they are good for specific things. I can only see the titles and news resources expanding. Thanks for the comment. I really like your signature line.

Kindle does seem to be getting some buzz. Guess I will need to play with one sometime.

I tired some e-books on my PDA for awhile, but missed the feel and texture of paper. And turning pages, and not worrying about batteries. Not to mention worrying about it falling between my legs while sitting on the throne! Been there, done that. I’ll stick to paper books.

One day someone will come up with a new invention. Printed on paper, no batteries, shock proof, heat & water resistant…..................could call it a book.LOL

I think it’s a great idea! You don’t have to make a trip to the library/bookstore, you will most likely eventually be able to buy anything from anywhere (If I remember correctly it has a Wi-Fi connection). And it saves trees! (But I suppose it does use crude for plastic and such.) I’ve never been an early adapter though, always a big number of bugs to iron out, upgrades to make, prices to slash.

These things have been tried before, without success; I can’t see where Kindle will do much better. You have to lay out a steep $349 for this thing, then $10 for a “book”. Even if you are saving about $10 a book, it’s going to take buying 35 books to recoup that cost. If you are a very avid reader – maybe; but it’s not for me.

I was reading an article last night about a guy lamenting the loss of vinyl records and their liner notes and album cover art – and he hit a nerve with me. Looking back, he’s quite right; I used to love the big cover art and reading the liner notes as well. Now, you just download the MP3 to your iPod and lose that feel of the band from the liner notes, photos and cover art.

Kinda the same way with this Kindle thing – their is something about holding a book, looking at photos (if any), and the contrast of the words and paper – versus the harsh grayness of the Kindle.

Amazon is offering this simply to improve profits; how much do you think it costs them to send you an electronic file (book)? Probably one cent. Contrast that to warehousing thousands of books, setting up a system to fulfill the order and physically ship it?

Reminds me of cell phones as well – there’s not much upkeep to a radio signal, versus land lines, poles, substations, and all the rest.
